It can be tough.
And when it gets better, it gets tough again…
But then it gets better again too…
It’s just the way it goes…the waves of life.
Sometimes we take the time to notice the waves while other times we prefer to pretend they do not exist and life can start to feel like it is out of control.
It is during these times…those out of control moments…that we can go into panic mode…desperately hoping someone will throw us a lifeline. We no longer feel like we are riding the wave, but more like we are drowning fast.
Generally, we believe something in our life to be the source. This could be due to a job we don’t like, a bad relationship, an overactive schedule, or simply from never feeling like you have enough time to meet all the demands in your life.
This may sound cliché, but stop for a minute and take a breath. The amount of time it takes to be intentional about taking your next breath is all it can take to bring you back to the moment and away from the life you’ve come to believe has taken control of you. This one breath or one minute to take a breath can be all it takes to regain the control you think is gone forever.
You are not changing anything about your life in a literal sense…the storm still awaits…but the way you feel can start to change. In fact, the more you begin to realize you do have some control, the same storm will start to downgrade. Suddenly, it does not feel so massive and you are able to break it down to more manageable tasks.
As you become more comfortable with stepping away from the storm, you begin to notice what control you do have. You may even draw awareness to the next wave…the one where life just feels better…and relax into this.
You see, our lives do become out of control at times, but when we take a minute (literally) to breathe, we might understand how it got that way. We tend to set ourselves up in life and things evolve as they do because of our actions. When we can see this, we also take responsibility for it and accept what is happening as well as the notion that we might be able to change it if we do not like it.
Decide how you want to live and start to do that. Take control in these seemingly simple ways and allow life to evolve from there. We need to take the steps to live the life we want, but also trust the process along the way.
That’s really all we can do. The rest…the storm…well, it is only as big as we allow it to be. So breathe in your calm and embrace the waves.
